Many people buying oud for the first time struggle to understand real vs fake oud oil because synthetic versions are now very common in the market. Real oud oil comes from naturally formed agarwood resin and has a deep, evolving aroma that changes slowly on the skin, moving from smoky and woody notes to warmer and slightly sweet layers over time. Fake oud oil, however, usually smells sharp, flat, or overly strong at first and fades quickly without developing any real complexity. Authentic oud also feels richer and more natural, while synthetic oils can smell chemical-like or artificial. Since genuine oud is rare and expensive to produce, extremely cheap “pure oud” products are often diluted or imitation blends, making it important for buyers to understand quality before purchasing.
