You ever notice how food just tastes better after 11 p.m.? Like, I do not know if it’s the exhaustion, the weird hunger that kicks in after a day of back-to-back classes, or just the fact that your standards are way lower when you're half-asleep but I swear, a greasy slice of pizza or some random gas station taquitos can feel like gourmet if the vibe is right.
And listen, I am not proud of this, but some of the best meals I have had since starting uni weren’t even from real restaurants. I am talkin’ sketchy food trucks parked behind clubs, 24-hour diners with cracked leather booths, and one very questionable shawarma spot that I am pretty sure was operating illegally (still fire though).
Like, one time me and my friends were walking home from a party around 2 a.m., completely starving and slightly buzzed (do not fworry safe walk home program was active). We stumbled upon this tiny food cart on a side street near campus, and the guy was just selling grilled cheese sandwiches. Nothing fancy. But he had, like, ten kinds of cheese and weird toppings like jalapeños and crushed Doritos (?!). I got one with pepper jack, hot sauce, and pickles, and I still think about it to this day. That sandwich fixed something in my soul.
I know I am not alone in this either. I have had entire 3 a.m. heart-to-hearts with strangers over $1 tacos. There’s something magical about food when you’re running on empty mentally, physically, emotionally. Like, suddenly a bag of chips and a fountain Coke from the 7-Eleven becomes a full-course meal.
And do not even get me started on post-midterm takeout nights. Y’all know the ones when you’ve been studying (or, let’s be honest, procrastinating) for hours, and your brain is just done? That’s when I hit up this place near my apartment that does Korean fried chicken. I always get the soy garlic wings and a side of kimchi fries. That combo has seen me through like, five mental breakdowns and at least two identity crises.
Honestly, I think this all ties into how chaotic student life is. We do not really have regular schedules. Some nights I am cooking pasta at 7, other nights I am reheating leftovers at midnight and pretending it’s a full meal. Sometimes I eat breakfast at 1 p.m. and dinner at 4 a.m. I have learned to stop judging myself about it. We’re all just doing our best out here.
Oh and side note there’s this weird overlap between food and deadlines that’s hard to explain. Like, I’ll be ordering takeout while also texting someone to please send me the notes from last week’s lecture, and at the same time Googling: “can you do my essay” or something equally desperate. I know everyone’s had that “write my essay” spiral at some point. Especially during finals. I even considered using a write my essay online Canada service last term when I had three assignments due in the same week. Didn’t go through with it, but not gonna lie, I still have the tab open on my laptop... just in case.
But back to food because that’s the real hero here. I do not think people give enough credit to those late-night eats that literally carry us through school. Like, I know it’s trendy to post pics of fancy brunch or latte art, but where’s the appreciation for the $5 donair that saved your life after a shift at work? Or the leftover Chinese food that you ate cold straight from the container because there were no clean forks left?
Also, huge shoutout to campus food spots that stay open late. Y’all are the real MVPs. Our campus has this little sandwich place that’s open till 1 a.m., and the dude behind the counter has seen me at my absolute worst and still remembers my order. I do not even know his name but we’ve shared a bond built on toasted bread and mutual exhaustion.
I guess the point is, food hits different when you’re a student. It’s not just about taste it’s about timing, mood, location, price (duh), and whatever kind of mental state you’re in. Half the time I do not even remember what I ordered, but I remember who I was with, what we were talking about, how tired or hyped we were. It becomes a whole memory, you know?
Anyway, I am probably gonna regret this later, but I just ordered pad thai from this new spot that opened across from the library. It’s already midnight, I have got an 8 a.m. lab, and I still haven’t started my reading. But whatever. The food will be good, I’ll probably eat it while half-watching YouTube and pretending to study, and life will go on.
Moral of the story? Do not underestimate the power of trashy (but delicious) late-night food. It's practically a love language for students.
